Background of the Study
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized psychotherapeutic approach used to treat a variety of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorders. CBT focuses on modifying dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, and behaviors through structured, goal-oriented therapy sessions (Beck et al., 2023). Psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in the implementation of CBT interventions, particularly in settings like the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, where mental health services are in high demand.
Despite the growing recognition of CBT’s efficacy, its implementation in Nigeria faces several challenges, including a shortage of trained psychiatric nurses, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and cultural barriers that influence patients’ acceptance of therapy (Aliyu & Musa, 2024). Research indicates that while psychiatric nurses are increasingly integrating CBT into their practice, the effectiveness of these interventions in Nigeria has not been adequately evaluated (Okonkwo et al., 2023).
At the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, psychiatric nurses provide essential mental health services, including CBT interventions. However, it remains unclear how effective these interventions are in achieving long-term behavioral change and symptom reduction among patients. Additionally, the extent to which psychiatric nurses adhere to CBT protocols and tailor interventions to meet the specific needs of their patients requires further investigation (Olawale et al., 2024).
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of CBT interventions delivered by psychiatric nurses in treating common mental health disorders at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Sokoto. By evaluating patient outcomes, therapy adherence, and nurses' competence in delivering CBT, the study will provide insights into the strengths and limitations of current therapeutic practices and offer recommendations for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health disorders are a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with increasing cases of depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders requiring effective treatment strategies (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). While CBT has been widely acknowledged as an effective intervention, the effectiveness of psychiatric nurses in delivering CBT remains under-researched, particularly in Nigerian healthcare settings (Adebayo et al., 2024).
Several challenges hinder the successful implementation of CBT interventions by psychiatric nurses in Nigeria, including inadequate training, time constraints, and cultural factors that affect patients' willingness to engage in therapy (Umar & Salisu, 2023). Additionally, there is limited empirical data assessing the impact of CBT on patient outcomes in psychiatric hospitals. Understanding how well psychiatric nurses apply CBT techniques and how effective these interventions are in improving patient well-being is crucial for strengthening mental health services in Nigeria.
This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing the effectiveness of CBT interventions provided by psychiatric nurses at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, with a focus on treatment adherence, patient improvement, and challenges faced by healthcare providers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on psychiatric nurses working at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Sokoto, and their use of CBT interventions in treating mental health disorders. The study will assess the effectiveness of these interventions based on patient outcomes and therapy adherence. Limitations may include variations in patients’ responses to therapy, self-reported data biases, and potential constraints in accessing patient records.
